As so many of Sam Shepard’s plays do, Fool for Love takes place in the desert on the edges of American civilization. The events play out over one evening in a single motel room in the Mojave. May and Eddie have a combustible and self-destructive pattern of break-ups and reconciliation. They have loved each other since high school and are compulsively drawn together. May is running from their family secrets and Eddie is pursuing her.

In William Shakespeare’s classic comedy The Taming of the Shrew, the strong-willed and outspoken Katherina is deemed an unmanageable "shrew" by society, but no one is allowed to marry her younger sister until the eldest is wed. To win her hand, the determined suitor Petruchio employs unconventional and often humorous tactics to "tame" her, leading to a battle of wits and wills that ultimately reveals deeper themes of love, power, and transformation. The play explores the dynamics of gender and marriage in a comedic yet thought-provoking manner.
